a delightful relaxing break in a genuinely beautiful setting

After months under house arrest (I'm supposedly 'at risk' and 'vulnerable'), we couldn't wait to get away and took up Mr & Mrs Smith's suggestion of a stay at Olea never having been to Zakynthos before but loving other Greek islands. The island is party central for some of the more unattractive British tourists, in parts, but with a car it is easy to find beautiful beaches away from the crowds and tourists bars and shops, and Olea is high in the hills - child-free, tranquil and calm. We had a terrific time and feel much regenerated for our break, but I'm also sad for Front of House Manager, Spyros, when he reads some of the less positive reviews here. He only left his previous hotel in Athens eighteen months ago to take up the management of Olea at a challenging time and is working so hard to get it right. Oliver, below, describes the lovely site well - ancient olive trees and careful prolific planting combine with cool cubist modern architecture, with planted roofs and spacious modern rooms, set on a hillside overlooking the sea. and many of the apartments have their own proper pools, not just tiny plunge pools, but ones large and deep enough to swim in. There are spacious high ceiling public and guest rooms, enormous double sun beds, excellent food options and a 'nothing is too much trouble' approach. But, as Spyros explained to us, there are many challenges right now for those in hospitality with new staff who had to be providing a professional service to guests just 7 days after they were told that the hotel could re-open and bookings started pouring in, allowing little time for the usual careful training and rehearsals which an experienced hotel manager would wish to be able to implement. We found that direct, honest feedback either to Spyros, who was anxious to hear from his guests, or to the helpful woman who was the Customer Relations Manager specifically in post to deal with customer niggles, was actioned almost at once. We commented on the absence of spoons at breakfast and a day later they were on every table. We asked about the delays between orders being taken at breakfast and food arriving and from then on the service speeded up noticeably. Lovely fresh orange juice and limitless chilled water was offered frequently. The breakfast options were excellent and the attention to Covid care meticulous without being in any way intrusive. The place has a deliberate philosophy of relaxation, privacy, calm, quiet and so it is not really for those who wish to have instant action, are somehow pressured for time and expect young, inexperienced staff, learning fast on the job after months out of work, to provide immediately the faultless service to which they all aspire. There are indeed some minor hiccups - our coffee machine only arrived on our last day, we left a note for our chambermaid who immediately supplied missing mugs and glasses, the cool basin design in the bathroom and the low water pressure are less than ideal, though they all look great. But the huge beds are really comfy, the vast double sunbeds a delight and the absence of music and noise was particularly appreciated. Service in the Cocoon Bar was a bit relaxed and drinks in the excellent Flow Restaurant took longer than they should, but the staff are trying hard to meet the difficult Covid safety requirements in a hotel that is already running at 85% capacity so soon after re-opening. They are learning new skills daily, and working longer hours than most of us would find acceptable, so we were happy to cut them some slack and be grateful they were so smiling and charming when often clearly a bit tired. We found nothing but kindness from all those who helped with luggage, delivered delicious room service meals (no wrong orders for us but we always ensured when ordering that our wishes had been understood by the helpful staff, some of whom are still practising their English). We found almost instant buggies materialised or arrived quickly when requested to run us up to the seventh tier (we loved 705 with pool and sea view) and to/from the car park. Dimitris, who hopes to return to his life as an actor when the world stabilises once more, couldn't have been kinder to me. Sofia and her colleagues on the front desk made helpful suggestions of things to do and places and go. And on our departure, Spyros made a point of walking down to the parking lot to wish us goodbye personally and ask again if we had any final comments. He is fully aware that all is not as slick as he would wish it to be quite yet, but anxious to hear from those with concerns face to face, rather than read whinges on TA. The island has much to offer and there are hundreds of really good food options if you want a change from Olea's options.... a rental car is a wise choice. It will get better and better as these very minor issues are resolved and I would unhesitatingly recommend it to others. We'd love to go back.

Tranquility in its finest form

We had treated ourselves to the Olea All Suites Hotel after a cruise. The hotel is set into a picturesque hillside above Tsilivi Beach. The zen like Hotel simply oozes tranquility. The low plain concrete buildings are combined and softened with natural materials like oak, bamboo and rattan. All terraced structures are surrounded by a seemingly flowing and cascading landscape of pools. The largest one of them home to a sunken Island with a sand floor bar and restaurant. The correspondence prior to our trip had been very friendly and helpful. So it was nice to eventually meet in person and say thank you. We reached our room by following a path through the landscape of pools, lined with olive trees, thyme and lavender, which filled the air with a pleasant scent. The room or better suite was large and the minimalistic design dominated by earthy colors and natural materials. The large patio with a stunning view of the pools and the ocean in the distance was shaded by a large olive tree. We felt home right away. My wife really enjoyed the complimentary daily yoga class at the highes point pf the hotel and was impressed with the yoga teacher. Breakfast is a delight! A vast variety of local and international flavors. All items are lovingly arranged and presented and of very good quality. Salats, fruit dishes, local pastry, cheese, smoothies, cakes… I could go on and on. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you Olea-Team.

Stunning hotel with great service

My boyfriend and I stayed at Olea for 5 nights during our trip to Greece. We were very impressed with the warm welcome and outstanding service we received from the hotel concierge staff, Kiriakos, who helped us plan every aspect of our trip, including hiring a car, arranging two boat trips, recommending incredible beaches to visit, booking the best restaurants on the island and also suggesting bars to visit. His help was invaluable and made our trip very enjoyable. The hotel facilities are great, we had a private swimming pool and also had access to two larger communal pools. The hotel offers a very handy buggy service to drive customers around the hotel grounds and to and from the parking lot. Our room was very spacious, modern and well designed. However, we encountered a number of issues during our stay: the shower had very low pressure, the toilet didn’t flush properly and the fan would randomly turn on and off without us touching the remote. This was solved by the facilities team but it should have been checked and fixed before we were given the room to ensure a smooth stay. Lastly, while the breakfast selection is great, the breakfast staff is not very attentive: we often had to request water on multiple occasions before being served water, every morning we had to specifically request a spoon as the cutlery on the table only included a fork and a knife. Although my boyfriend ordered the same black tea with milk and sugar each morning, every time the waiters would only bring the tea and not the milk or would forget the sugar, making our experience less smooth than we would have hoped. Overall, I highly recommend staying at Olea and I hope the breakfast staff’s service will improve over time.

Honeymoon without the gold star service

As the other reviewers noted, this hotel is beautiful. Aesthetically it is really special. We’ve just been very disappointed with the service, especially as it was our honeymoon. There has not been any major dramatic bad service, but as one other reviewer commented, just lots of small things. Some examples, we had to ring hotel to ask where our taxi was on arrival, whilst the breakfast is great, coffees and hot food orders take a very long time to be served. Spoons seem to be a rarity. I had to ask for one every morning. The housekeeping and room service staff need training, we’ve often had many (honestly a few!) people come into our room, we wondered whether they could install bells on rooms as not hearing a knock on the door seems to immediately signal entry. It didn’t make us feel super safe. Room service is prompt but inconsistent - sometimes they’d bring the ice bucket, mostly forgotten each time, when we asked for a beer bottle opener we couldn’t keep it as ‘it was the only one’, when we asked for a wine bottle opener another night, they took one hour to come and with just a beer bottle one. When we missed the chance to have our room made up, I went nearby and asked if they could back when finished other rooms, which they did but with a huge attitude. There was no drinking water glasses, coffee or tea on arrival in our room. I’m not sure if the mini bar is supposed to be stocked but there was nothing in it. Just one large bottle of water. We had a bottle of champagne as part of honeymoon, and received Prosecco and a plate of sweets with ‘HONEY MOON’ on a post it instead. We received a phone call at 1am about a drinks bill which woke us up, when mentioned at reception there was no apology and so we asked to see our current bill to ensure we were not being charged (we had a few wrong orders delivered to us in restaurants and in the room). We’ve noticed when walking to and from spa and sunset restaurant that taking plates from outside rooms seems to be lacking. Many plates outside many rooms for a long period of time. The only most helpful service we’ve found with this hotel is the ease of Covid testing as they arrange it for you at the hotel and they were helpful to change our fridge as ours was broken (and needed to store insulin). If you’re looking for a beautiful location to relax, this is it. But be warned on service level. Suite 514 (executive suite with sea view and private pool).

Nice hotel but staff needs training

We stayed here for 4 nights in Aug/Sep 2021. Generally mixed feelings. 1) Hotel design / rooms - very nice and cool. 2) Food - not bad, although it seems that the hotel is really trying to deliver something “different” but the end result is not really gourmet, would think they should focus on simpler dishes. 3) Concierge - Joana - super nice and organised quite a few trips / reservations for us. 4) Hotel staff - needs training!!!!!! They are all nice but just totally untrained. Examples: check-in at after 10pm with no queue that was taking 25min (why???), cleaning lady coming to the room when we ask her not to come, parking guard/bellboy seeing me carrying and loading large suitcases and not asking to help, reception desk mixing up dates and telling us we need to check out a day earlier, at cocoon resto - the waitress forgetting to serve the wine that we ordered, spa person insisting we need to complete the evaluation form of the spa even though we try to explain that we are running late and would do it later.... small things but which sum up and just illustrate general low level of training for the staff which is a pity. We stayed previously at Andronikos Hotel in Mykonos (slightly cheaper and not 5 star) but service was really impeccable. Suggest Olea manager goes there to learn service.
