Not what it used to be by far
What a shame 🙁 we have been going here for over a decade and the new owners have changed the family feel and the way it works. There is no more an area for karaoke or general gathering indoors as it is all now used for all inclusive dining. They have even removed the pool table where the hotels kids used to play all day. What is worse things though is you have to ask for a kettle if you are self catering, all of the choices you had for snacks with the myriad of breakfast and salad choices have all gone and a very limited selection with only Greek or tsadsiki salad or cheeseburger or fries or pre made choice of 3 baguettes. The very worst though is that you have to ask to have either your room cleaned, you need your towels or bedding changed or even your toilet bin! None is done daily like it used to or the floor even wiped as it used to. People were saying they hadn’t had it changed in a week! They said it was due to COVID but if the cleaners had masks and at least replaced the bins daily that would be hygienic. Other people at other hotels their rooms and bins were being cleaned daily and were disgusted. The steps and front have been ruined. Yes they were damaged in the storm but using breeze blocks on the beach that have broken up and gone into the sea has ruined the beach in front and there is even electrical wiring sticking out of the sand where you have to step off the dodgy ramp which used to be the lights at the end of the steps. Music is to be desired depending on who is running the bar. We even heard rave music being played loud at breakfast time! If you love salsa and Spanish music you’ll be sorted. That was every day. A polite request for different music was declined.
Very disappointing stay
My family have stayed at Alykanas Beach Hotel multiple times over the past 8 years. We stayed for two weeks in August this year and we were extremely disappointed. The hotel has now changed to all inclusive, I cannot comment on the food as we stayed self catering. As we arrived we were charged £192 euros for air condition in our two bed apartment, the staff at reception were not at all welcoming, If we had any issues we felt as though we were an inconvenience. We unpacked and went down to the pool area, It was extremely busy and we could see that lunch time had just finished, there were empty plates of food everywhere, there is not enough table space and people were eating meals on the sun beds! The children’s pool has a ring of green algae on the rim of the water, I didn’t allow my children in there all holiday. The jacuzzi was not working; the umbrellas around the pool were black and full of mould. The beach is now none existent, the steps that used to be there are now dangerous breeze blocks, we had to walk next door to safely get to the beach with the children. The rooms need updating, we have been aware of this for a number of years but as the hotel was in such a lovely setting this didn’t bother us too much however the cupboards doors didn’t close; the curtains needed ironing; they desperately needed painting and the rooms had to be requested to be cleaned which didn’t make any sense. We spent the whole two weeks using the pools at different hotels, Letsos is highly recommended. The grassed areas around the fountain were nearly a foot tall, it just looked a mess, this was cut on around day 10. We had a drink in the bar twice as we thought we would give it a chance, the bar staff were extremely rude and the price of the drink changed, It was more expensive second time round, two days later! The play area has now gone and there are cars everywhere around the hotel, the views from the back of the hotel is now a very busy car park The resort itself is still as nice as ever. Nikos the previous barman from Alykanas Beach has opened a bar just along the bridge off the canal, this was our saving grace as he made us feel extremely welcome and gave us the old Alykanas Beach feeling. - Thank you Nikos I don’t often write reviews but we have had some amazing holidays here over the years and it is really sad to see how it has changed. The staff used to be so friendly and you could tell that they took pride in the hotel, It now desperately needs some TLC. I will not be returning to Alykanas Beach.
Not accommodating/ No customer service
Terrible experience. I booked my hotel stay on a Wednesday. Zakynthos island announced a mini lockdown on Thursday morning with no warning to travelers. (clearly this is out of my control). Requested a cancellation and was refused. I booked under normal circumstances NOT under lockdown rules. They gladly took my money without being understanding and considerate. I emailed the hotel multiple times and have not received a reply. I even offered to negotiate HALF a refund. NOTHING. BE CAREFUL BOOKING HERE, the customer is NEVER RIGHT.
We have been to Zante 7 times, and stayed in Alykanas 4 times now, so we know the island and area very well. The previous 3 times we stayed at the Alykanas village until it went to all inclusive. The Alykanas beach had a good reputation so we decided to try that this year. Starting with the one good point - the location is fantastic, right on the beach but that said so is the village hotel next door. The room condition doesn't normally bother me, my opinion is I am only staying in the room to shower, change and sleep. And in Greece the rooms are usually very basic anyway. However the rooms in this hotel were awful, very very dated, the drains in the room smelt disgusting and the shower would suddenly turn scolding hot which when you have children isn't acceptable. Staff were not friendly which is really unusual for Greece. We stayed bed & breakfast and the buffet options were terrible. They do cater for all inclusive and apparently will be fully all inclusive next year., well they need a massive improvement as it was shocking what we saw. Everything seemed to be done on the cheap, for example at breakfast orange squash instead of orange juice and they even had had a standard 4 slice toaster to use. We did have lunch there one day, but was charged 18 euros for a bowl of chips, 3 ice creams and a fanta orange. Later on I was charged 4 euros for a local draught beer which is 3 euros in town, so felt ripped off and didn't eat there again for lunch and chose to eat next door at the village. We also ended up using the pool at the village next door.on most days as it was cleaner. The WIFI is an absolute joke, could never connect to it even if i was in the hotel lobby. I unfortunately had some work to do and as i couldn't connect had to use the dilemma bar next door for its wifi or the village hotel. The wifi in all the bars and restaurants in town and next door at the village were fine, so its nothing to do with location1 Also, as we had no reps due to the pandemic we had to rely on the the TUI app for updates, had to register our fit to fly home tests and apply for the return home PLF form we couldn't even do this at the hotel, so had to go elsewhere to do this. This really is unacceptable in this day and age, especially this year where so much had to be done online just to get home etc. To top it off, on the last day the pool bar decided to play rap music from 9am. Problem is they either didn't understand or didn't care that nearly all of the songs had explicit lyrics. Some of the artists were snoop dog, ICE T and Dr Dre. Most songs were played loud and had words such as 'mother f****r, i want to f*** you, f*** you and then when Afroman came on with his song 'i got high' the worst bit was ' I was gonna eat your p***y too but then I got high Now I'm j***** off . This is meant to be a family hotel and had lots of young children around. Completely unacceptable. I have never been so disappointed with a hotel, we were really looking forward to it. I know they are meant to be renovating the hotel over the winter, well on our experience they need to do an awful lot.
First and last visit
It all started at check in. They couldn't find our booking. Took more than an hour to check in. The AC: at the reception wasn't on so it wasn't so pleasent. It is very obvious that they are struggling financially. There are a lot of compromises/excuses because of the pandemic. For example: They don't clean the rooms daily, but on request. Why I can't understand, cleaning should be a priority during a pandemic. Try don't give beach towels. Why I don't understand, so one will have to reuse their own dirty towels. The facilities are worn down, not a lot of maintenance work. The staff isn't the most service minded and not enough staff. The dining room is small, the buffet hasn't a lot to offer. Limited choices and very pain food. The sunbeds are constantly moved around so there is no order. The pool isn't the most inviting you will see. The beach nothing to get excited about, but the sea is really nice. It was a big mistake buying all inclusive. This hotel is better used as a base, having breakfast and then exploring the island.
