Olimme lomalla apollomatkojen kautta.
Second Rate, Shabby and Screaming Kids Everywhere
Having not been on a package holiday for probably over 30 years, on the recommendation of a friend I decided to get away into the sun with Mark Warner. How wonderful it would be their literature espoused, I was really looking forward to having a relaxing time in the sun with a bit of sailing, cycling and generally relaxing, but how disappointed I was. And here are a few issues you may wish to consider before you book a holiday at Mark Warner Lavante Beach Resort: Firstly the flight from the Heathrow to Rhodes was more like a flying crèche than any flight I’ve recently taken. I seriously recommend you take your headphone/earplugs to drown out the noise of screaming kids as you may well be sitting next to them for the 4 hour flight. And don’t forget there will be a repeat on the journey home. Interestingly I cannot find a star rating for the hotel (other than on the MW website) which is strange because the other hotels situated next to it along the beach proudly present theirs. This should tell you something. Having recently travelled extensively across Spain and Italy I can tell you the cleanliness and finish of the accommodation of this hotel does not come up to the standard of any 3 star hotel I have recently stayed in, so you may wish to reflect upon this if you’re anticipating something at the higher end of the ‘luxury’ scale. This is exemplified by the shabby and tired presentation of our room, with torn furniture and poor maintenance. The level of cleanliness particularly in the bathroom was desperate. The shower surround was mouldy and even the outside of the shower tray was filthy. The pervading smell of stale urine from the drain in the bathroom floor ever present. As I say, not even worthy of three stars in my opinion. The hotel’s bar/reception are described on the MW website as ‘chic marble lobby and sophisticated bars’ however I can assure you that this area has the charm and appeal of a departure lounge at a regional airport. And according to the MW literature this resort is “custom designed” so one only has to wonder what the other hotels MW offer are like. Talking of breakfast the food is presented canteen style, self-service and the quality of it equates to what I would suggest you’d expect to receive in a motorway service station. Despite having paid for half board I decided to eat at local restaurants to escape yet more screaming kids over dinner, I really don’t need it having listened to them everywhere else in the hotel. It was a complete delight to escape the hotel and enjoy a decent meal overlooking the water in tranquil surroundings. In relation to the other hotel facilities there are three pools, two of them with screaming kids, one of which is reserved for adults which strangely enough gets the sun beds bagged just after breakfast. Take note. It’s not all negative however. The beach crew were everything they should be, they must be have a decent manager in place here as everyone had a ‘can do’ attitude and were there to help, nothing was an issue. Despite some of the kit being a little tired, which is to be expected as it probably gets trashed, they delighted in delivering good client care and must be applauded for this. However, the same cannot be said for the bike hire facilities. The bloke that manages it, I think he’s called Curtis, seems to think he is doing you a large personal favour by letting you have a bike and seems to take delight or get some kind of power trip in telling you what you can’t have! Fortunately there are two other lads there helping with the bikes who have respect for clients and understand they are there to make your holiday enjoyable. In fact getting out of the hotel (on a bike or by foot) was the major contributor to me not booking the next flight home! In summary I was decidedly underwhelmed by the MW experience. This was due to the combination of poor cleanliness and shabby presentation of the accommodation, mediocre food at best, screaming kids everywhere and the attitude of one particular member of staff in the bike hire facility. In my opinion you could probably get better quality accommodation, service, food and value for money elsewhere. Simply search here on Trip Advisor as there are plenty of other hotels on Rhodes I am sure that will delight you.
It's highly likely we'll be back.
Mark Warner were a good company to travel with. There were reps at Heathrow and at Rhodes Airports to help us. The staff were all very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The food was pretty good throughout, we were half board so had to pay for lunch but other than the day it rained, we were able to eat away from the main buffet restaurant which is a lot more expensive for lunch than the other two places to eat there. There was so much on offer to do but beware as a lot of experiences cost a fair amount and once you've done a couple or more they start to add up. As a family of four we spent an extra £1000 out there including diving & sailing courses, tennis and food. We all enjoyed the activities we booked. I also had a few treatments at the spa which was pretty good, the actual spa area was very quiet as I think it's only for guests who have booked treatments. The childcare was excellent. Flexible, friendly and great for getting the kids to try out water sports. Both our two really enjoyed their time with the Juniors. The hotel was quite accommodating. We had a deluxe interconnecting room which catered well to our needs. I will say that the bathroom wasn't that clean on our arrival and none of the complimentary toiletries were full. The conditioner was pretty much empty and despite leaving it without the lid on to show this, it was never topped up by housekeeping. It wasn't a big deal so I didn't mention it but when complimentary toiletries are mentioned on the website, it would be nice if they were actually included. The flights were both seamless, checking in, baggage drop, security and onboard were all done well with BA. On the way back the Captain was so friendly he invited my kids into the cabin to sit in his seat and wear his hat. He even took a photo with his ipad which sent us a branded photo with all the flight information around it.
Fantastic staff and service, beautiful place but tired, shabby rooms with dirty bathrooms.
We had a lovely week at this resort. The Mark Warner staff and bar/hotel/restaurant staff were all superb and super helpful. Always a smile and they all made you feel, despite being in a large resort, that they cared. There were three pools plus a small kids pool and the sailing/windsurfing/watersports facilities were fab. The food was plentiful and good. The only real downside was that we went at the end of the season and while our suite had a great aspect, and the staff had listened to our requests in terms of location, it was very tired looking and not very well cleaned. There were no mattress covers on the beds, which was a little disconcerting and the sheets barely covered the double mattress. The chairs were peeling, the bathroom towels often had off-putting brown marks on them, so we had to share one or two towels between us and the dirt and general smell in the bathroom was awful - it smelt like a urinal. It was not a place to linger, but just to do what was needed to be done and get out as soon as possible. The pool towels were also frayed and faded and looked like they would be better off as floor clothes.
Beware if you have an allergy
We had a great week here - well, if you don't count the stormy October weather. But..... I have an allergy to seafood, this means eating out can be stressful and limited. It really isn't always obvious which dishes may contain shellfish (for example, asian curries often have shellfish in their sauces), it is particularly hard to ask for advice in a foreign language and with unfamiliar dishes. I was absolutely thrilled to see in the restaurant an A4 sheet listing that days (buffet style) main courses and the allergens they contained - wow, stress free menu choice!! Brilliant. However, I soon had doubts. Tuna salad was shown as having crustaceans ... possible I suppose if the tuna was processed in a factory also processing shellfish. The same for the battered cod listed as containing crustaceans. But crustacean in caesar salad - how would that happen? This could be seen as cautious 'over labelling' and therefore completely minimising risk, or it could be because the restaurant didn't understand what they were doing. This proved to be the case...... steamed mussels were shown as containing crustacean but not mollusc!!! The worst example was a seafood risotto which was shown as containing no allergens - I pointed out to a member of staff that this was clearly wrong and was told that if the list showed no allergens then it contained no allergens. I showed them the obvious prawns and mussels in the dish - and the response was it didn't need to be on the list then because it said 'seafood' in the title. I concluded that the lists were useless - actually worse than useless since they gave a false sense of security. Allergens are a very serious issue and I have only given the hotel one star in the hope it makes more people read the review ... and be warned if they too have an allergy.
