Clean and cheap but boring
Booked our visit through Love Holidays and was initially meant to be going to another hotel but it was changed at the last minute to this one. From the look on the website it looked great, with multiple resteraunt and bar choices. When we arrived at the hotel we had to fill in quite lengthy personal information forms which was quite time consuming, surely this information would have been provided to them by the travel company. We travelled as a group of 6 ( 3 x adult couples) and upon arrival we were asked if we wanted to share a suite which technically was an upgrade with a private pool which was great but there was the expectation we would except this and we didn't really want to share but we did agree to do this in the end. The room itself was clean and it was cleaned everyday (beds made and fresh towels) beds were really comfortable but there was 2 singles joined together to make the double which isn't ideal. Air con was really good and in each room. The shower wasn't too good, there wasn't much room to manoeuvre (My partner is quite built and 6 foot tall and he struggled to move around, get in and out and wash properly) the doors where also not great as they were almost hanging off the hinges. Pool facilities where good, there was 3 x pools, a slide pool and 2 for kids. The water was absolutely freezing and it took your breath away getting in but that's more a product of the weather, would be great when the sun heats them all day. The actual grounds were good, well kept with Gardner s about cutting down the trees and mowing the grass and there was staff walking around sweeping up / emptying the bins etc. The food was really disappointing, nice for the first 2 or 3 days but there was no change in the choices of mains other than swapping chips for wedges or chicken or turkey etc. This lead to us eating out a few nights which we wouldn't normally do on an all inclusive holiday. Local resteraunts were good and you got value for money. Local area had plenty of tourist shops and the beach is within walking distance although the sea was too rough to even get close to. I think apart from us there was one other English couple, it was mainly German/ Swedish/ Austrian. This meant that we didn't really interact with many people on the holiday as little English was spoken. The staff at the hotel were helpful but that's it, there was no conversation, just yes and no answers and there was little acknowledgement. For example, you had to walk past the reception desk to go to the resteaunt and the lady on the desk would keep her head ducked down. Unless you initiated the conversation there was nothing, not even a 'good morning' The hotel was pretty boring, covid has been used as an excuse for nothing to be done. There was no entertainment the full week we were there. There was entertainment guides all over but none of it appeared to happen apart from aqua aerobics we seen twice and bingo on the final day. We ended up going to bed at like 8pm after the evening meal as there was nothing else to do in the resort. All of the bar staff by the pool made you feel unwelcomed and the drinks were really cheap and poorly made. The beer and wine at the self serve was fine and they also had food there throughout the day along with ice cream which wasn't too bad but again no variety. None of these advertised resteraunts such as an Italian and Greek where none existent, I actually couldn't see where these would be pre-covid. The free WiFi at the hotel was awful, you could get it barely at the main areas but in the rooms there was no chance. If you moved it would drop out. Phone signal wasn't great either indoors and I never usually have any issues abroad. All in all, it was a cheap get away in the sun which ticked the boxes. With some improvements it could be so much better.
Honest detailed review - good visit but not 4* standard.
A good week long stay in September at Rethymno residence but not 4 star standard for me. We were English and in a really small minority of English tourists at this time. Pool - 3 pools and one set of slides, we stayed around the adults only pool for the whole holiday and it was really chilled which we enjoyed. Pool bar was open as well as a self serve bar / ice cream in the adults only area. Food - not great. There was choice for all meals - lots of fish, fresh fruit, salads & one small stand with a chef cooking - examples being eggs, pancakes, lamb chops, pasta but usually only 1-2 options there and not much variety at all for being a 4* hotel. Had much better elsewhere. We ate dinner out on 3/7 nights. Only 1 restaurant and 1 snack bar which was disappointing as it’s sold as “5 restaurants”. Drinks are also all local - even soft drinks are “carbonated lemon / orange” for lemonade / Fanta. All inclusive ends at 10:45pm. We arrived late and had a selection of cold meats / salads we could have as dinner was closed which was nice. Location - brilliant! Right next door to a shop / excursion place and take a left out of hotel and there’s multiple shops, car hire, bakery, restaurants etc. 1.20 euros for a single bus journey, bus stop right outside hotel and goes all the way into old town and harbour which is really nice! A must visit and only takes around 15 minutes. 80 minute journey from Heraklion airport. Beach - opposite hotel, there is a path at the side of the bus stop that takes you to the beach as well as if you take a left out of hotel you can get to some beach bars “banana beach” and a little bit of a nicer part of the beach. Beach is part sand, part stones so beach shoes are a must. Room - we had a superior double room. Room was big and spacious but air con was poor in our room as it was tucked away in corner so didn’t do much for us. Beds were comfy enough and we had two single quilts; on our double bed which we surprisingly liked. Room had a fridge but only a bottle of water in - not restocked. Bathroom was ok too - few small toiletries provided. TV with Netflix option. Evening entertainment - poor. No children’s entertainment from what we seen and only two ‘shows’ whilst we were there. Magic show which we missed and a ‘disco night’ which was good, but just a DJ playing good songs and people dancing. All held outdoors by the pool bar and was always room for us to find a table however, can’t imagine this being the same in July / August. Overall, a good relaxing stay. Weather was fantastic - 28-33 degrees for mid September. Loved the adults only area. Great location and would recommend but be prepared to eat out too and go out on evenings if you like something to do.
A much needed vacation
We had a very good time at Rethymno Residence. We were a group of 8, all adults. The staff is very nice, friendly and attentive especially the restaurant staff and the bartenders at the pool-bar. (we spent most of our evenings o the terrace of the pool bar). The had a number of cocktails on the list and also wine, spirits an beer. The rooms were clean and also room-service came every day to tidy up. The furniture in the rooms needs an update because some of it is old and does not look very nice and maybe they should reconsider the weird bathroom doors. I understand what the designer was going for, but a bathroom door should be opaque. We appreciated the fridge and the air-con. The food was good and everyday we found something different. I personally ate fish everyday and it was cooked in different ways. You can never go hungry at this hotel, because if the restaurant is closed between meals, the snack bar is open. If you have day trips planned there is also the option for you to have a very early breakfast or a late dinner. The hotel as activities everyday, like aqua gym and yoga and pilates. The instructors do no play around, we had a good workout. The location of the hotel is not bad at all, it is close to beach bars and 2 minutes from the bus station. You can easily take the bus to Rethymno old town, and if you don not want to go by bus, the staff at the front desk will happily call a taxi for you (only that will cost more than the buss). Also if you want reservations made at any restaurant, the front desk will make them for you. All in all we had a wonderful experience at Rethymno Residence, the pluses outweighed the minuses and it is for sure on my ''visit again list''.
Not as good as advertised by travel agency
Room: Room was smaller than in an offer (was to be 45sqm, we got around 30sqm). In the beginning there wre constant issues with room fuse getting off just when air conditioning was on, no other power consumers. Has been fixed after 1 day. Room layout was poor - 2 rooms with 2 beds and 1 room wiht 1 bed fronting the toilet with semi-transparent door. Toilet not well isolated from the living part. Furniture in the room is quite devastated, old and has few drawers. We were to get a suite SUX1, we had impression we got the smaller room just arranged for 5 people by removing sofa from the living room and placing a bed there - directly fronting the not-well-isolated toilet). Pools: Quite ok, 3 pools of rather small size, but no issues to get a sunbed even after breakfast. The most attended pool was not as clean as the other ones. Food: Very much average food, most of the dishes not appealing, first hotel with very poor / uneatable croissants. Some dishes were good, but these were exceptionally rare, quite unusual in Greece.
Very nice and helpful staff. Beautiful hotel, separated from the road by the fence, so it is quite and relaxing inside. Mini waterpark, good food and very good location. Many thanks for all the hotel personnel for their hard work during these times.
